When I entered Binghamton University, my Jewish identity was really an extension of that of my family’s. I followed Judaismas I was taught, and as I had done as a member of my family. I never really asked questions; everyone else in my family did it, so, so did I. Being apart from that and being taken out of the fishbowl, allowed me to study and observe others, their practices their customs. Furthermore, I asked questions and found out why we do certain things. This helped to solidify or even create my OWN Jewish identity, as opposed to having one that was an extension of my family.
For me, the Chabad House was a home away from home. It was always nice being welcomed with open arms when I didn’t know what I was doing as a freshman and sophomore. The main purpose of Chabad is to bring Jewish students together. It is so difficult to meet Jewish people in this world, and Chabad knows that, so they help to bring Jews together.
