When I first came to Binghamton, I thought I understood what it meant to be a Jew. I thought I could explain to myself and to the world what I believed in and what was really important. Now that I'm graduating and moving on, the only thing I can now say about my life as a Jew is that it's just beginning. I have learned so much from the Jews here about Judaism, Israel and what it means to be a good person. And yet I am now aware of how much more I have to learn. We are a unique people with a complicated past and an even more challenging future. And while I have not found all the answers, I have found friends that will share the journey with me. To me, that is what being a Jew now means.
I want to say thank you to Chabad and the Jewish community here because even though the last four years have been a struggle, they have also taught me that being a Jew is above all working for a life of peace and happiness that can only come when we are proud of who we are and can celebrate our Judaism with the people around us.
